Reading e-texts effectively and efficiently depends on mastery of a complex set of reading skills, study skills, and technical skills. Natasha Ploss and Sarah Powley collaborated to identify these skills and teach the technical skills specific to Chromebooks and the Honors Chemistry e- text to Natasha's students. The presenters conducted student surveys and extensively researched the field of reading comprehension as it relates to e-texts. 91% of the students reported that their ability to use e-texts improved because of what they learned. Individual teachers of all disciplines who use e-texts or are likely to use them in the future can benefit from understanding the complexity of reading e-texts and, beyond that, of reading online. A handout listing the reading and technical skills required to use e-texts successfully will be provided.
